The Liberty of Small Business in America

We here at Damico Gallery are so truly grateful for all of you. I’m also grateful for my team who so diligently shows up to help make this organization run. For all the hard work they dedicate here for me and all of you, I have to give them a little time to rest, recharge, and just soak up some good free time. So, we’re closed next week, July 3-8 but will resume operations on Tuesday, July 10.
Speaking of free time, I invite you to reflect on what independence means to me as a business owner. Freedom is something that allowed me to set out and start a company when I was 24 years old. My company has remained sustainable for 12 years now. I sometimes get emotional when I think about how amazing it is that I (and we!) have the freedom to do such a thing. Yeah, it has been hard a process and there are definitely things I would love to change about our great nation, but at the end of the day, I want everyone to know that I’m proud to call this country my home.
I feel driven to share what is at the heart of our freedom that gets overlooked all too often. Did you know that the full name of the Statue of Liberty is “The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World”? I think that’s a truly amazing title. I believe strongly in “liberty.” The dictionary defines it this way: the state of being free within a society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one’s way of life, behavior, or political views.
This very concept has allowed me to do what I love every day. And every day I feel a little more enlightened about myself, my craft, and the people I serve. Every day it’s my sincere hope that I help preserve this freedom and enlightenment in a way that contagiously spreads to others. That is something I believe truly makes the country great.
So, I leave you with a final thought: while you do whatever you do to celebrate the independence of the United States of America, please remember your liberty. In my opinion, it is the most powerful thing you have and is one of the most enlightening concepts you can help to spread!
Happy July 4th, America!
